Madama Butterfly is one of the most popular operas of all time.

Using the mime and puppetry of traditional Japanese Kabuki Theatre as its point of departure, Tessa Bremner’s production clearly delineates the cultural complexities of the story line whilst allowing space for the rich emotional impact of Puccini’s glorious music. This production draws patrons into the romantic web that Puccini spins whether they are seasoned genre-lovers or operatic first-timers.

Celebrate the area’s rich history of Italian settlement at this year’s Carnevale Italiano, a celebration of "All things Italian"

Date: Sunday 13 April
Time: 10am mass followed by music to 4pm
Venue: New Italy Museum Complex, Pacific Highway, New Italy (ten minutes south of Woodburn)
Cost: $5 per person; children up to the age of 14 free.

On 13 April, the descendents of New Italy will celebrate the anniversary of fifty Italian families who immigrated to Australia in April 1881, and they invite you to join them.

The knowledge that has passed down through the generations has seeped into the Australian psyche - the love of fresh Italian food, Italian wine and Italian music. Carnevale Italiano is a day to immerse in this culture.

A highlight of this year's event is the introduction of Spaghetti Circus to entertain the children with juggling and acrobatic workshops as well as The Italian Conversation Corner where only Italian will be spoken - tricky if you find you have accidentally wandered in.

Tony Pantano - otherwise known as the Golden Voice of Italy - makes a much anticipated return. Fortunato, well loved through his many appearances at the Italo-Australia Club in Lismore, is appearing for the second time. Fantastic music, dancing and a great atmosphere will ensue.

The day commemorates the original immigrants who settled at New Italy. These Venetians, mostly contadini - tillers of the soil - fulfilled a desire to escape the harshness of their homeland to sail to paradise. What took place was anything but that and this story is now part of the historical makeup of the Northern Rivers region of NSW.

If you have not been before this is a great day to enjoy the museum and pavilion in a family-friendly setting where bocce, horse and cart rides and circus combine. There is a competition for best Italian costume and best opera singer as well as raffles and salami wheels and a lucky door prize of two nights accommodation at the Ramada Hotel and Suites, Ballina.
